How to play Freecell
In a typical Freecell game you have to move all cards from the tableau to four foundations. The tableau is a term for all the cards on the game area or game grid. A foundation contains all cards of one suit (hearts, spades, clubs, or diamonds); a foundation starts with an Ace and you need to build it up to King in ascending order. On the tableau you can move a card (or a sequence of cards) onto another card if that card is one higher in value and of alternating color. There are "free cells" or "freecells" that you can use to park one card. You can move any card or sequence of cards to an empty column on the tableau.
Freecell Tips and Tricks
Almost all Freecell deals are solvable (99,99%) if you plan your moves carefully. The main tip for solving a Freecell level is to try to free up a column or stack on the tableau and to free lower rankings cards early on in the game (like the Aces and twos). Some other tips for winning a Freecell layout:
  • Scan the entire tableau at the start of the game and analyze it. Check to see if you see issues with the tableau like low cards that are deep down in a column and difficult to use in a game. It's important to plan your moves a few moves ahead.
  • Try to keep free cells open and free as much as you can, use it to temporarily store a card that you can move to the foundations or tableau soon after
  • A free column is better than an empty free cell since on a free cell you can only hold one card and on a free column you can have a sequence of cards.
  • Create sequences of cards on the tableau in descending order and alternating suit. It helps you to free up columns and you can use a "power move" to move the complete sequence.
  • Most Freecell games allow you to play a so-called "power move": a "power move" is a move in which you can move cards of a sequence (cards in descending order and of alternate suit) in just one move. Such a move is only possible if you have empty columns and/or empty free cells. The game calculates for you how many cards you can move in one move depending on the number of free columns and free cells. The formula for the number of cards you can move in one "power move" is: (1 + number of empty free cells) * 2 ^ (number of empty columns).
  • Try to get as many columns with sequences of cards (in ascending order and alternating suit) starting with the highest card possible, preferably with a king.
